Comet

Comet

The solid part of the comet is the nucleus, consisting of rock and frozen gases. When a comet nears the sun, the nucleus heats up and forms an atmosphere, a coma. Solar winds sweep the material from the coma into a long tail of dust and particles (dust tail) and a tail of electrically charged particles (ion tail).
